This is a small artificial lake area of 450 acres, built by the Greek electricity supply company in 1923 for the electrification of Chania.
In 2009 after 80 years, was given to the local community because of its ecological character.
Today hosts, perhaps the largest variety of aquatic plants in Crete and many important species of ferns and frogs and is a haven for many migratory and non birds and that is exactly why is protected by international treaties.
